New York Power Authority CEO Richard M Kessel is seeking approval of a contract for up to $7.5m for the installation of 1.1MW solar photovoltaic system at the University of Buffalo.
The contract is subject to the approval of the NYPA board of trustees.
Solar Liberty, an installer of solar power in the US, will be responsible for the solar panel procurement.
‘Most of the work for this project, which will be the largest solar installation at any college or university in New York State and one of the largest on any campus in the country, will be undertaken by Western New Yorkers,’ Kessel said. ‘Solar power and other sources of renewable energy tend to be labour intensive in their applications, contributing to their appeal as a way to develop new industries and spur economic activity. In fact, renewable energy is one of the key elements of Governor Paterson’s strategy for building a new economy for the people of New York, and the Power Authority is delighted to be contributing to this with the solar power array at the University at Buffalo and other clean energy initiatives.’
Solar Liberty CEO Adam Rizzo added, ‘This project shows that you can produce clean, renewable energy at a commercial site, or on your home’s roof, at a lower cost than buying it from a traditional power plant. This past year we’ve seen a huge increase in projects coming from education, nonprofit, and government institutions.’
The project is expected to be the largest ground-mounted solar photovoltaic system in New York State and one of the largest photovoltaic systems in the Northeast. It will consist of approximately 5,000 solar panels and generate 1.3 million KWh of energy annually.

That’s fantastic. 5,000 solar panels, that’s a lot of energy generation material. I see power companies starting to panic!
