NV energy announces utility approval for three renewable energy projects

17 December 2009

US power company NV Energy has announced that the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada has approved three power purchase agreements in the state.

The approved contracts include a 20MW solar photovoltaic project to be constructed near Searchlight, Nevada by American Capital Energy; a 26MW solar photovoltaic project that will be constructed by a subsidiary of Fotowatio near Apex, Nevada; and an 11MW landfill gas project at the Apex Regional Landfill to be completed by Energenic.

All three PPAs stem from the company’s request for renewable energy proposals in 2008, and will help it to comply with Nevada legislation on renewable energy, which will require 20 per cent of NV Energy’s sales to come from renewable energy and conservation by 2015, and 25 per cent by 2025.

All three projects will be in operation by the end of 2011, with the American Capital Energy solar project set for completion at the end of next year.

Headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada, NV Energy is a holding company with principal subsidiaries, Nevada Power Company and Sierra Pacific Power Company, doing business as NV Energy.

The company recently signed a memorandum of understanding with power marketing agency Western Area Power Administration to develop 500KV transmission lines and associated facilities to deliver renewabl energy resources to electricity users in Nevada, California, Arizona and other markets in southwest US.
