Progress Energy announces efficiency programmes, solar water heating pilot

Progress Energy Carolinas has announced plans for three energy efficiency programmes, including a residential solar water heating pilot programme.

The programmes include Residential Home Energy Improvement, Commercial, Industrial and Government Energy Efficiency, and Residential Solar Water Heating Pilot.
This follows four new programmes approved by the N.C. Utilities Commission in October for residential load control, new residential construction and new and retrofit programs for commercial, industrial and government energy users.

The commission is still reviewing an investment in a distribution system demand-response system proposed by Progress Energy, that will be capable of reducing peak demand by nearly 250 MW, the company said.

These programmes are a part of the company’s strategy to double its energy efficiency portfolio to 2,000 megawatts MW and potentially delay the need to build power plants.
Progress Energy has more than 21,000 MW of generation capacity and $9bn in annual revenues.
