SolFocus, Dreen Europe, Águas de Portugal partner to develop 8.5MW of solar power

29 September 2009

Solar energy developer SolFocus has partnered with renewable energies developer Dreen Europe and Portuguese utility Águas de Portugal to install 8.5MW of power of concentrator photovoltaic technologies at its facilities. The project is part of ADP Group’s plan to invest more than €830m by 2014 in renewable energy projects.

The goal of the project is to secure three per cent of the country’s electrical needs, thereby preventing 724 thousand tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The project deployment will start in 2010 for the first 2MW of power and thereafter the project will be deployed in phases for the following four years, according to a statement.

SolFocus CEO Mark Crowley said, ‘The high energy generation capability of the iconic SolFocus CPV systems, which convert sunlight to electricity at over 25 per cent efficiency, result in a good solution for ADP today. Now one of the largest CPV projects in Europe, this project puts Portugal on a steep trajectory of driving energy costs down at a very rapid rate.’

Águas de Portugal is a Portuguese group devoted to pursuing national objectives in water supply and wastewater sanitation. Board member for ADP, Antonio Branco, said, ‘We believe that investing in new and disruptive technologies such as SolFocus CPV is key to driving the global initiative for higher renewable energy usage.’

With headquarters in California, SolFocus enable solar energy generation at a Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) that competes with traditional fossil fuel costs by developing photovoltaic technology that combines high-efficiency solar cells with optics to provide solar energy solutions.
