US rooftop solar photovoltaics manufacturer Solyndra has received a $105m order from Italian solar integrator Sun System. The order, to be delivered over several years, will be used in rooftop solar developments in Europe.
The cylindrical, thin film photovoltaic panels – manufactured at Solyndra’s Californian facilities – are designed to generate higher electricity levels than conventional low-slope commercial rooftop systems, with lower installation costs.
Dr Domenico Ruggeri, technical director, Sun System, said, ‘Solyndra’s technology sets a new standard of performance on commercial rooftops compared to conventional PV technologies in terms of installation cost, rooftop loading, non-penetrating wind performance, and energy production per roof.’
Solyndra began construction on its second manufacturing facility in September, which will add an addition 500MW worth of solar panel production per year. Financed through a $535m DOE loan and a $198m equity financing round led by Argonaut Private Equity, the extra production capacity will be necessary for the company to fulfil its estimated $2bn contractual backlog.
Sun System previously used Solyndra’s solar panels on a rooftop system for Tessitura Uboldi, a company based in Northern Italy last September.
Dr Chris Gronet, CEO, Solyndra, said, ‘We are excited to announce this relationship with Sun System, a highly innovative integrator of medium and large-scale commercial PV systems. Sun System’s strong presence in Italy and beyond, coupled with Solyndra’s advanced PV systems, will accelerate the deployment of world-class photovoltaic installations on commercial rooftops in southern Europe.’
