SunPower to supply Casino Group with PV panels, produces world’s most efficient cell

Solar technology provider SunPower has been contracted by French retailer Casino Group to supply an additional 20MW of photovoltaic panels for installations in France and has announced a new world record in efficiency.

The agreement with Casino Group builds on a similar 15MW deal between the two companies last year and will enable Casino Group to turn under-used roof space and parking areas into power plants to produce renewable electricity and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The Silicon Valley-based manufacturer of solar cells, panels and systems said it has also produced a full-scale solar cell with a sunlight to electricity conversion efficiency of 24.2 percent at its manufacturing plant in the Philippines.

SunPower said this is a new world record, confirmed by the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Lab, for large area silicon wafers.

SunPower will supply Casino with its SunPower E19 Series solar panels, which offer a current record efficiency of 19 per cent or greater.

‘As an indication of the fast development of GreenYellow, the renewable energy subsidiary of the Casino Group, and to improve our continued commitment to sustainability, Casino Group is very pleased to extend our agreement with SunPower and install solar power systems on a significant number of additional properties,’ said Philippe Houins, COO of Green Yellow.

The combined 35 megawatt agreement will result in solar power systems at 18 of the company’s properties, on rooftops and parking lots.
