Tata Power to develop Maharashta’s largest grid-connected solar photovoltaic plant

9 July 2010

India’s largest power utility, Tata Power, is developing a 3MW photovoltaic (PV) based, grid-connected solar plant in Maharashtra, which it said will be the largest grid-connected solar plant in the region.

Tata Power aims to the plant by end of 2010 on a 12-acre site in Mulshi. It also said it plans to install solar capacity in Gujarat towards meeting its target of having 20-25 per cent of total capacity from zero-carbon power by 2017.

The company set up its first 100KW solar power plant in 1996 at Walwan in Lonavla.

Following the Indian government’s announcement of the National Solar Mission and policy incentives, Tata Power’s increased its solar power generation targets to 300MW of capacity by 2013.

Banmali Agrawala, executive director of Tata Power’s strategy and development, said that the 3MW solar power plant is progressing well and the company will be commissioned later this year.

Tata BP Solar is the technology provider for the project, which will be Tata Power’s and Tata BP Solar’s first experience with building, operating, and maintaining a megawatt-scale grid-connected solar power plant in India.

Tata Power has an installed generation capacity of over 2900MW and presence in all segments of the power sector including transmission, distribution and trading of thermal, hydro, solar and wind power.
