In his US Budget plan for fiscal year 2010, President Obama has said that they will build a new economy that is powered by clean and secure energy through Budget funding as well as grants provided in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act 2009.The Budget sets a plan to tackle climate change, supporting economic investment and positions in the US as the world leader in climate change technology. In turn, the development of solar, biomass, geothermal, wind and low-carbon emission coal power will be accelerated.
The Obama Administration intends to build upon the $11bn provided in the Recovery Act for smart grid technologies, transmission system expansion and upgrades as well as other investments to modernise system expansion.
The 2010 Budget, along with the $1.6bn provided in the Recovery Act, will invest in the Office of Science. The Budget increases funding for improving understanding of climate science and expands graduate fellowship programmes to train students in energy-related fields.
Finally, the Budget also provides support for the Office of Electricity, Delivery and Energy as part of President Obama’s investment plan to modernise the nation’s electric grid. It includes energy storage, cyber-security and investments in research, the development and demonstration of smart grid technologies that will accelerate the transformation of the Nation’s energy transmission and distribution system.

Smart grid tech will not adress the major problems with grid efficiency, and is an intentional distraction and diversion of funding away from tru clean tech and hydrogen fuel infrastructure. Our grid is inefficient due to not storing the energy in a usable, transportable manner, which hydrogen accomplishes. Switching stations will do absolutely nothing to solve that major inefficiency problem, however it does put billions of dollars into the hands of those opposing hydrogen and other clean tech rollouts historically.
