Walmart Puerto Rico and SunEdison to install solar PV systems

3 August 2009

Walmart Puerto Rico and SunEdison, a US solar energy services provider, are to install rooftop solar systems on five Walmart PR stores with the potential to expand to 23 over the next five years.

Under the agreement, SunEdison will finance, own, build and operate the photovoltaic solar systems which will amount to 4.3MW of total capacity. Construction of the first installation is expected to start before the close of the year.

Renzo Casillo, president & CEO of Walmart Puerto Rico, said, ‘We are transforming every aspect of our operation, and that includes energy consumption. Last year we achieved an 8.7 per cent reduction in energy consumption compared to year through the implementation of energy-saving strategies and the installation of energy-efficient equipment.

‘Today, our new Walmart stores are 21 per cent more energy-efficient than locations were in 2005. With this solar energy project we’ll continue to broaden our efforts towards our main objective of covering 100 per cent of our energy needs from renewable sources.’

Recently SunEdison sold three spanish solar plants to Hannover Leasing.

Great news. Another step would be to install solar panels on the roofs of the parking lots.
