Marine company SeaRoc secures offshore wind farm management contract

9 February 2010

UK marine and engineering company SeaRoc has secured a new contract for its SeaPlanner division to provide its suite of offshore wind farm management web applications for the 367.2MW Walney offshore wind farm project owned by DONG Energy and Scottish and Southern Energy.

The SeaPlanner web applications, which the company said will allow the project team to access GIS data integrated with real time information on their UK wind farms, will be used during the construction phase to provide an oversight of marine operations. Use of secure web technologies will allow disparate users, such as DONG Energy, central management in multiple locations to see progress on site.

SeaRoc said the decision comes after the successful implementation of the system at the Gunfleet Sands offshore wind farm and will be used for monitoring vessel traffic, tracking personnel, contractor management, identifying weather windows and accessing asset and survey informationSimon Gulliver, SeaPlanner senior IT project manager, said, ‘We are excited to be working with one of the leading wind farm owners to deliver our web applications and data solutions for their new venture.’

The company said the SeaPlanner system was designed to improve the safety and efficiency of site operations. Experience of other projects has highlighted the challenge of managing a large number of personnel transferring between marine structures and vessels on an offshore wind farm project.

Other marine operations risks inherent in the construction of offshore wind farms are addressed through real time and auditable vessel tracking and the management of mission critical met ocean, survey, operational and asset information such as jack up footprints and as-built data.

SeaRoc said the system will assist DONG Energy’s personnel to deliver a safe and successful project. The company provides marine and engineering support exclusively to the marine renewable energy sector and its SeaPlanner division offers clients expertise in GIS analysis, data management and web applications designed specifically to assist in the management of offshore wind farms.
