Energy consulting firm KEMA wins contract for 1,200MW offshore wind farm

Global energy consulting and certification firm KEMA has won the open European tender on the Front End Engineering Design Study (FEED) study for two offshore wind farms in the North Sea issued by German utility EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg.

The FEED study was designed to provide input and basis for EnBW’s project planning and investment decisions. Once fully operational, KEMA said the wind farms, which will be situated around 85km north of the island Borkum, will have a maximum capacity of 1,200MW and produce approximately 4.5bn KWh per year.

KEMA said it will be responsible for the set-up and evaluation of several design concepts such as the park layout, foundation types, platform concepts, installation procedures and maritime logistics. The information will provide major input for the design of the offshore wind farm, which will be according to the specifications of the Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie, the German Federal Office for sea shipping and hydrography.

The company said that the project return will be optimised due to the consideration of total cost of ownership including purchasing, erection, operation and decommissioning with risk and sensitivity analyses. An international team from KEMA’s Netherlands and German offices will handle the work. KEMA said it will be supported in the project by IMS Ingenieurgesellschaft, Hamburg and DEWI, Wilhelmshaven.
