German energy company RWE has completed the final stages of its Suwalki wind farm in Poland. The 18 turbine farm is to increase the Eastern European nation’s wind generation capacity by ten per cent compared to 2008 levels.
The farm will produce 80 million KWh of electricity per year, enough to power 40,000 homes. The turbines are the largest in Poland, with each 100 foot turbine equipped with a 93 foot diameter rotor.
Demand for wind energy is increasing as Poland moves to comply with European Union directives on renewable power, which is predicted to grow from 5.8 TWh in 2007 to 13.4 TWh, 10.4 per cent of all energy sold to end users.
Janusz Moroz, a member of the management board of RWE Polska, said, ‘Potential for development of technologies for capturing the energy from renewable sources is still huge. This is why RWE, looking into the future, is committed to building wind power stations. I am glad that our investment in Wind Park Suwalki will contribute to increase of generation of clean energy and will increase its share in Poland’s energy mix.’
The Suwalki project is the first in a pipeline of wind energy projects RWE has planned in Poland, including a 34.5MW wind farm in Tychowo, expected to come on-stream in 2010. RWE has stated plans to build 300MW of capacity in Poland by 2015.
RWE has 1,420MW of installed wind capacity in Europe. In September, RWE acquired Essent, the largest producer of renewable energy in the Netherlands, for €7.3bn.
