State of Maryland awards NRG Bluewater Wind 55MW power purchase contract

NRG Energy’s subsidiary NRG Bluewater Wind has been selected as one of three companies to supply power from renewable sources to the state of Maryland.

NRG Bluewater will provide up to 55MW of wind generation, which will be its second power purchase agreement in the region.

In 2008, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley more than doubled Maryland’s renewable portfolio standard that requires utilities to purchase 20 per cent of their power from clean energy sources by 2022.

The State of Maryland in partnership with the University of Maryland, designed the Generating Clean Horizons proposal programme to help spur development of commercial-scale renewable energy projects. The Generating Clean Horizons award supports and helps realise the recently signed tri-state partnership by the Governors of Maryland, Virginia and Delaware, which calls for the Mid-Atlantic States to leverage resources to bring offshore wind energy to the region.

‘We commend Maryland for its vision in developing offshore wind resources,’ said Drew Murphy, NRG Energy’s regional president. ‘This project also helps meet the state’s renewable portfolio standard, and advance the commercialisation of clean energy technologies in a competitive manner.’

NRG Bluewater Wind is expected to receive the agreement later this month from the University of Maryland. The company also has a 25-year, 200MW purchase agreement with Delmarva Power & Light Company.

Headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, Fortune 500 company NRG Energy provides more than 24,000MW of generation capacity.
