The third quarter of 2008 saw venture capitalists invest $1bn into 73 US cleantech deals, according to the MoneyTree report from PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association. This was an increase of 14 per cent in the second quarter of 2008, which saw $887m invested into 68 deals.
Mark Heesen, president, NVCA, said, ‘During the next year venture capital investment levels will be driven significantly by the clean tech sector, which will continue to grow despite economic woes and could become the top investment sector for the venture capital industry by 2012.’
According to the report, the top two deals of any kind were in cleantech, with a further two deals making the top ten.
This quarter is the second time investment into clean technology projects has exceeded $1bn.
