US Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman has announced that $104.7m in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will go to clean energy and efficiency technology research at seven national laboratories.

Aviation giant Boeing is to join with aerospace company Honeywell to commission a study on the sustainability of saltwater-based plant candidates for renewable jet fuel. The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi will lead the study.

Fraunhofer IKTS (Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems) has selected Optomec’s Aerosol Jet Solar Lab system to be part of its Energy Systems Department. The system, which will be installed at the IKTS facility in Dresden, Germany, will be primarily used to develop front side collector line printing solutions to increase solar cell efficiencies.

TÜV SÜD America, Inc. has announced a cooperation agreement with Renewable Energy Test Center (RETC), an engineering services and test provider based in Fremont, California. Solar photovoltaic manufacturer Suntech Power Holdings Co. has opened its first photovoltaic module testing laboratory in China, alongside Underwriters Laboratories. Located at Suntech’s headquarters in Wuxi, the photovoltaic module testing facility is the largest in China with 1400sqm and 7000sqm of indoor and outdoor testing space, respectively.

Infrastructure, finance and media giant GE invested $1.4bn in cleaner technology research and development in 2008, up from $750m in 2005. The company has also reduced its own greenhouse gas intensity, and is making progress against its other goals for revenue growth, water and technology innovation, according to a statement.

US Secretary of Energy Steven Chu has announced that $2.4bn from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will be used to expand and accelerate the commercial deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. The funding is part of the Obama Administration’s ongoing effort to develop technologies to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas and contributor to global climate change, into the atmosphere while creating new jobs, according to a statement.
